THE PARENT PLAYBOOK FOR RAISING CHARACTER LEADERS
30 – 60 minutes (depending on partner request)
INTRODUCTION
The Sports-Parent. . .
- sets and prioritizes their goals for their child while participating in sports
- understands the stages of talent development
- understands and plays their role as a sports-parent
PRE-COMPETITION SUPPORT
The Sports-Parent. . .
- prepares their child to participate in sports
- engages in CONVERSATIONS with their child about sports
- understands the pressure their child may be under to perform well
- views their relationship with their child’s coach as a PARTNERSHIP
COMPETITION SUPPORT
The Sports-Parent. . .
- provides their child with competition day TIPS to reinforce their values
- serves as a role model while ATTENDING child’s sporting events
- is engaged during competition to reinforce goals
- refrains from coaching their child and allows the coach to do their job
- understands that youth and high school sports is education not entertainment
- recognizes that their conduct is a reflection of the organization
POST-COMPETITION SUPPORT
The Sports-Parent. . .
- is aware of the motivation and conduct of a parent who lives vicariously through their child
- avoids engaging in the post-game analysis
- provides unconditional love and support independent of child’s performance
- is more concerned about their child’s character than their performance
- embraces and reinforces their child’s other gifts so their identity doesn’t come through playing sports
- does not interrupt their child’s adversity
- understands the organizations protocol and intervenes in an appropriate manner
- enjoys their sports-parent experience
